A disturbing incident involving the assault of a lawyer by police officers has ignited public outrage and prompted urgent calls for accountability and reform within the Sri Lanka Police.

According to reports, the lawyer—who had clearly identified himself as an Attorney-at-Law—was allegedly manhandled, verbally abused, and physically assaulted by officers attached to a local police station while attending to a client matter. Witnesses say that despite repeatedly asserting his professional capacity, the lawyer was dragged and beaten in public view, an act many have described as a blatant abuse of authority.

Bar Association Condemns Attack on Justice

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has issued a strong statement condemning the assault, emphasizing that it represents an attack not only on one individual but on the entire system of justice.

“This is not merely an assault on a lawyer—it is an assault on justice itself,” a senior BASL spokesperson said. “When those sworn to uphold the law turn against officers of the court, it shakes the very foundation of public trust.”

The BASL has called for an immediate impartial inquiry, suspension of the officers involved, and comprehensive reform of police conduct and disciplinary mechanisms.

Violation of Fundamental Rights and International Law

Legal experts assert that the incident constitutes a grave violation of the lawyer’s fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 11, 12, and 13 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka, which safeguard citizens from torture, ensure equality before the law, and protect against arbitrary arrest or detention.

Moreover, the act contravenes Principle 16 of the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers (1990), which obligates governments to ensure that lawyers can perform their duties without intimidation, harassment, or improper interference.

A Deeper Issue of Police Impunity

Human rights advocates stress that this case is not an isolated event, but part of a recurring pattern of police misconduct and impunity. Despite numerous previous complaints, few officers have faced accountability for abuse of power.

“When law enforcement becomes law-breaking, the entire justice system collapses,” a senior human rights activist warned. “Accountability must begin at the top.”

Path to Justice

The assaulted lawyer is expected to file a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court, seeking redress and systemic change. Civil society organizations have pledged their support, urging the Inspector General of Police to ensure swift and transparent investigation.

This incident has reignited national debate on police reform, human rights training, and independent oversight, all essential to rebuilding public faith in Sri Lanka’s justice system. “If a lawyer can be assaulted inside a police station,” one senior counsel asked, “what hope remains for the ordinary citizen?”
